President’s Message
Fall 2011

First, a belated “thank you” for electing me to lead this outstanding organization!  Speakers for the Fall Conference have been finalized and by now everyone should have received a flyer.  We hope to see everyone at Deer Creek.

At the Spring Conference, it was suggested that we reinstate annual All Association meetings.  Therefore, the 2011 All Association meeting will be on Friday, November 18th at 10:00am at the ODYS Training Academy.  In addition, all Executive Board meetings will be open to OJDDA members.  2012 meeting dates will be posted on the website after they are finalized at the November 18th meeting.

One of the Board’s goals for the coming year is to get more members actively involved in the Association.  With that in mind, we have established committees to assist with the day-to-day operation of the Association and to share knowledge and expertise in areas that affect juvenile detention centers.  We are proposing establishing six Committees with one or two Executive Board members chairing them.  Below is a list of proposed Committees and a brief description of the responsibilities associated with each one.

Conference:  Select conference sites; handle arrangements (i.e. block sleeping rooms, food, meeting room, etc.); obtain speakers/presenters; handle paperwork (i.e. sign-in sheets, evaluation forms, certificates, etc.).

Juvenile Justice:  Circulate information relative to the field including legislative updates, articles, etc.

Bylaws:  Periodically review and revise the Association’s Bylaws; develop Mission and Vision statements.

DYS Standards Review:  Arrange for OJDDA to be represented when revisions are being discussed; request feedback from the Association; propose recommended changes to the Association for review and concurrence prior to submittal to DYS.

Communications:  Circulate requests for information from Association members; rework the OJDDA website; update the website as needed.

Elections:  Keep records of Board members’ terms of office; recruit members to run for office; circulate Nomination forms; coordinate elections at semi-annual conferences.

Other suggestions for Committees are certainly welcome.

I look forward to representing and serving the Association for the next two years.  Please feel free to contact me with issues/concerns, suggestions, recommendations, or any ideas you have that will strengthen our organization.

Again, thank you for your support.
